Govinda in Avatar: Fire and Ash? The real story behind the viral clip

If you’ve been scrolling through social media recently, you may have come across a viral clip that appears to show Bollywood actor Govinda making a cameo in James Cameron’s latest film, Avatar: Fire and Ash. The video depicts Govinda as a Na’vi, dressed in glittering, colourful Indian attire, with captions claiming he features in the new Avatar instalment. The claim, however, is false.

The truth behind Govinda’s ‘cameo’

The clip circulating online is AI-generated and has no connection to Avatar: Fire and Ash. In the doctored footage, Govinda is seen speaking in his trademark Mumbai dialect while scenes featuring Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington) and his family play in the background. These scenes do not exist in the film.

Why the video went viral

The AI video appears to draw inspiration from Govinda’s long-standing claim that he was once approached to star in the original Avatar (2009). Over the years, the actor has said he met director James Cameron but turned down the role despite being offered ₹18 crore.

In an interview earlier this year with Bheeshm International’s YouTube channel, Govinda claimed:
“I met a Sardarji in America and gave him a business idea that worked. Some years later, he introduced me to James Cameron. He asked me to do a film with him. James said the hero was handicapped, so I refused. He offered me ₹18 crore and said the shoot would last 410 days. I said the money was fine, but if I had to paint my body, I would land up in a hospital.”

Govinda has also claimed that he suggested the title Avatar to Cameron and later admitted regretting his decision. The film went on to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, earning $2.92 billion globally. Its sequel, The Way of Water, grossed $2.3 billion, while the latest instalment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, reportedly opened to $347 million worldwide.

Industry voices dismiss the claim

Govinda’s long-time collaborator and producer Pahlaj Nihalani has dismissed the actor’s assertions. In a 2024 interview with Friday Talkies, Nihalani suggested Govinda may have confused Cameron’s Avatar with a shelved Bollywood project of the same name.

“He doesn’t know what clicked in his mind because of the title Avatar. Later he kept claiming he was doing Avatar in Hollywood. His mind’s disc got confused and switched from Hindi to English,” Nihalani said, referring to a sports drama titled Avatar that they had completed about 40% of before it was cancelled at Govinda’s request.

In short, Govinda does not appear in Avatar: Fire and Ash, and the viral clip is an AI-created fabrication rather than a genuine Hollywood cameo.
