Google Loses $100 Billion in Market Value Following OpenAI’s ChatGPT Browser Launch
Shares of Google fell nearly 5% on Tuesday following the unveiling of ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI’s first artificial intelligence-powered web browser. The launch positions OpenAI in direct competition with Google Chrome, which currently boasts around 3 billion users globally and has integrated AI features via Google’s Gemini technology.
ChatGPT Atlas: AI-Powered Browsing
ChatGPT Atlas transforms OpenAI’s popular chatbot into a full-fledged gateway for online searches, potentially increasing internet traffic and digital advertising revenue for the company. OpenAI reports that ChatGPT has over 800 million users, including free and paid subscribers, and is exploring additional ways to monetize its platform.
The browser offers a personalized web experience, capable of handling tasks such as booking flights, editing documents, and summarizing or analyzing website content. A new “Ask ChatGPT” sidebar allows users to interact with any website, while the agent mode, currently available for paid users, can complete tasks end-to-end on their behalf.
In a demo, OpenAI showcased ChatGPT automatically purchasing ingredients from Instacart for a recipe — a process completed in minutes, highlighting the browser’s task automation capabilities.
Competing With Google Chrome
ChatGPT Atlas now competes directly with Google Chrome, which held a 71.9% global browser market share in September, according to StatCounter. Following the launch announcement, Google’s parent company Alphabet saw its share price drop from $252.68 to $246.15 within 15 minutes, erasing around $100 billion in market capitalization.
Google has been adapting to shifting search behaviors since ChatGPT’s debut, offering an AI-powered “AI Mode” in search results that provides chatbot-style summaries alongside traditional links.
With ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI is aiming to redefine the browser experience, creating a new avenue for AI-driven web interaction and directly challenging Google’s dominance in online search and browsing.
