Global Protests Erupt After Israel Blocks Gaza Aid Flotilla
Protesters across the world on Thursday condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of 41 ships carrying over 400 activists—including politicians and climate campaigner Greta Thunberg—bound for besieged Gaza.
The flotilla, which set sail from Barcelona last month, was halted by the Israeli navy on Wednesday and prevented from delivering humanitarian supplies to Gaza, where the UN warns of famine after nearly two years of war. Among those detained were former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau and South African MP Mandla Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela. Israel says the passengers will be deported.
Outrage spilled onto the streets from Dublin to Istanbul, with tens of thousands demanding sanctions and an end to Israel’s blockade. In Barcelona, municipal police counted 15,000 demonstrators chanting “Gaza, you are not alone” and “Freedom for Palestine.” Riot police clashed with protesters who attempted to breach barriers.
In Dublin, hundreds rallied outside parliament, drawing parallels between Ireland’s anti-colonial history and Gaza’s plight. “I am worried sick for my daughter, but proud of her,” said Miriam McNally, whose child was aboard the flotilla.
Demonstrations rippled across Europe:
-
Paris & Marseille: Thousands marched, with French police arresting over 100 pro-Palestinian protesters at a weapons manufacturer accused of supplying Israel.
-
Rome & Italian cities: Ahead of a union-led general strike, protesters urged Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to distance Italy from Israel, chanting “The genocidal machine must stop.”
-
Brussels & Geneva: Crowds lit smoke bombs and bonfires, urging the EU to halt funding to Israel and protect aid ships.
-
Athens: Protesters denounced Israel as an “apartheid state” during a fiery rally.
-
Istanbul & Kuala Lumpur: Thousands demanded a total embargo on Israel and the release of detained activists.
Rights groups and demonstrators branded the interception a “barbaric escalation,” saying even humanitarian supplies are being blocked. “They are just bringing in aid and baby food… This arrest is unjust,” said Ili Farhan, protesting outside the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
The wave of protests underscores mounting global anger at Israel’s Gaza campaign and international frustration over governments’ failure to stop the blockade.
