Fresh Border Clash Erupts Between Thai and Cambodian Troops Near Disputed Temple Site

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia flared again on Thursday as both countries confirmed a fresh border clash near the contested Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple.

According to official statements from the Thai army and Cambodia’s defense ministry, the skirmish took place along the frontier in Thailand’s northeastern Surin province.

The ancient temple complex, though situated on Thai territory, is also claimed by Cambodia, making it a long-standing flashpoint in bilateral relations. Both sides have blamed each other for initiating the latest exchange of fire, which reportedly involved small arms but caused no immediate casualties.

Military officials from both countries said efforts were underway to de-escalate the situation through local command-level talks.

The renewed violence comes amid simmering diplomatic strains over border demarcation and cultural heritage rights, with Prasat Ta Muen Thom—like the better-known Preah Vihear temple—symbolizing broader nationalistic tensions in both Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
