Forget 2027 World Cup — BCCI Condition Could See Kohli, Rohit Retire Right After Australia ODIs: Report
Barely a month after India’s memorable Test series win over England, attention has shifted from on-field triumphs to the future of two of its biggest cricketing icons — Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. According to a Dainik Jagran report, the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia this October could be the duo’s final outing in the 50-over format.
Kohli and Rohit, who retired from T20Is in June 2024 and from Tests earlier this year, were long expected to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, selectors reportedly want all prospective World Cup players to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year to stay in tune with the format — a requirement that could prompt both stalwarts to call time on their ODI careers.
With India’s white-ball bench strength deeper than ever, selectors are said to be focusing on grooming younger players for the next World Cup cycle. If the Australian series — starting October 19 in Perth and followed by games in Adelaide and Sydney — does mark the end, it will be remembered as a farewell tour for two of India’s most celebrated batsmen.
