Florida Politician Chandler Langevin Censured Over Calls for Mass Deportation of Indians
Florida politician Chandler Langevin faced backlash on Saturday after the city council formally censured him for a series of social media posts calling for the mass deportation of Indians from the United States.
According to the Washington Post, the censure limits Langevin’s powers: he must now seek consensus before placing items on the agenda, cannot make commissioner comments, and has been removed from city committees.
Controversial Remarks
Langevin’s posts targeted Indians in the U.S., accusing them of exploiting Americans financially and enriching India. In one post, he wrote, “There’s not a single Indian that cares about the United States,” and added, “They are here to exploit us financially and enrich India and Indians. America for Americans.”
After widespread criticism, he clarified that his comments were aimed at temporary visa holders, not the broader Indian American community.
In a separate post, Langevin linked Indians to taking advantage of the U.S. in response to news about a traffic crash involving Harjinder Singh, an India-born driver charged with killing three people after an illegal U-turn.
On October 2, he posted on X (formerly Twitter), calling on former President Donald Trump to revoke all Indian visas as a “birthday wish”: “Today is my birthday and all I want is for @realDonaldTrump to revoke every Indian visa and deport them immediately. America for Americans.”
He also told reporters, “Indians don’t assimilate. They’re here to drain our pockets and get back to India rich… or worse… to stay.”
Appealing to Conservative Groups
In his most recent post on October 18, Langevin addressed conservative Hindu and Indian groups in Florida, claiming many agreed with his stance on mass deportation. He wrote, “Some of you may not agree and that is ok, but I have been traveling the state of Florida… engaging in dialogue with conservative Hindu groups. Many are coming around to realize that mass immigration into America, even from India, is hurting them as well and are willing to leverage their influence to help save America.”
He added that he would prioritize saving “a few Shashi’s” over “hordes of Islamists, commies, cartels, and indentured servants stealing American jobs.”
Reaction and Aftermath
Several Indian American organizations have condemned Langevin’s remarks and called for his resignation. In response, Langevin denounced the censure, claiming the city council’s action violates his right to free speech.
