At least five kanwariyas were killed and two others injured late Sunday night after a DJ music system mounted on their vehicle came into contact with a live high-tension wire in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, police said.

The victims were part of a group of devotees participating in the final Monday of the Shrawani Mela. They were en route to offer holy water at Jayesthgaur Nathsthan after collecting it from the Ganga in Sultanganj.

Bhagalpur SSP Hridyakant confirmed the tragic incident, stating, “A DJ vehicle came in contact with an electric wire and overturned, killing five people on the spot. We are making efforts to provide financial assistance to the victims’ families.” He added that the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Law and Order) is stationed at the scene and authorities are trying to trace the driver of the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred around 12:05 AM, when the vehicle carrying the victims got stuck in the road. As the driver maneuvered it out of the mud, the elevated DJ sound system struck a low-hanging high-voltage power line, triggering an electric shock and causing the vehicle to overturn into a nearby canal.

Nine people were on the vehicle at the time, while dozens of other kanwariyas were walking alongside on foot with the procession.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the mishap, including whether proper safety measures were followed during the religious procession.
