False Reports in Pakistan Media on ICC-BCCI Meeting Exposed
As tensions between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) escalate, sections of Pakistan’s media have intensified efforts to project the country as holding the upper hand in the dispute.
During a discussion on ARY News, a panel of journalists and cricket analysts debated the boycott of the India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match scheduled for February 15. In the broadcast, it was claimed that top ICC and BCCI officials had rushed to India for an emergency meeting to resolve the crisis.
Nauman Niaz, a regular contributor to cricket-related programmes, said ICC Chair Jay Shah and CEO Sanjog Gupta were in Mumbai to find a solution, citing concerns over broadcasting revenues and the economic impact of a potential cancellation.
“I have breaking news that Jay Shah, who is the ICC chair, Sanjog Gupta, the CEO, and the head of the BCCI’s digital project, have convened in Mumbai,” Niaz said. “Broadcasters cannot afford to miss the India-Pakistan match. If this game doesn’t happen, it will hurt not just broadcasting rights but the economy as well.”
He further referred to ICC regulations, claiming that failure to fulfil participation agreements could result in penalties of up to $20–40 million for Pakistan. However, he suggested that negotiations would prevent such sanctions.
Contrary to these claims, Jay Shah and Sanjog Gupta are currently in Milan attending an International Olympic Committee (IOC) session.
Cricket Germany confirmed their presence in Italy through a post on Instagram, sharing images of a meeting between its officials and the ICC leadership.
“We’re proud to share that our President, Mr Severin Weib, together with our Vice President Dr Vignaesh Sankaran, were honoured with an audience with ICC Chair Mr Jay Shah and CEO Mr Sanjog Gupta,” the post said.
The meeting focused on the development of cricket in Germany and future growth initiatives. The ICC officials also held discussions with representatives from Cricket Sweden, Cricket Denmark, and Cricket Jersey in Milan, suggesting a broader push to expand the sport in Europe.
These developments indicate that reports of an emergency meeting in Mumbai were inaccurate, casting doubt on claims circulating in sections of Pakistani media amid the ongoing standoff.
