The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has strongly condemned the death of Dr Sampada Mundhe in Phaltan, Maharashtra, and called for a transparent and time-bound investigation into the incident.

In a statement, FAIMA said:
“India expresses deep anguish and grave concern over the tragic death of Dr Sampada Mundhe, a young and dedicated government medical officer at Sub-District Hospital, Phaltan. Her untimely demise has deeply shaken the entire medical fraternity.”

The association added that Dr Mundhe was reportedly under severe mental distress linked to official and administrative pressures. Despite repeated attempts to raise concerns about her emotional and professional challenges, no meaningful action or relief was provided by the authorities, FAIMA noted.

FAIMA highlighted that the incident reflects the immense psychological burden faced by many doctors in stressful government setups and called for systemic safeguards to prevent similar tragedies.

FAIMA’s Demands

On behalf of the medical community, FAIMA has demanded:

  • An immediate, fair, and time-bound investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dr Mundhe’s death.

  • Strict accountability of all individuals and administrative authorities whose negligence or inaction may have contributed to her distress.

  • Support for Dr Mundhe’s family, including psychological, financial, and legal assistance.

  • The establishment of a robust grievance redressal and mental health support system for doctors facing administrative or disciplinary harassment.

“This is not an isolated tragedy; it is a grim reminder of systemic apathy and lack of institutional empathy toward government doctors,” FAIMA stated, emphasizing solidarity with Dr Mundhe’s family, colleagues, and the medical community.

Police Action

On Friday, Dr Mundhe, a government doctor in Satara, reportedly died by suicide, leaving a note naming a police official and two others.

Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi confirmed:

  • A case has been registered under charges of rape and abetment to suicide.

  • The police sub-inspector named in the note has been suspended.

  • Police teams are searching for the two other accused, and a thorough investigation with stringent action is underway.

The victim’s cousins alleged that she faced political pressure to conduct false post-mortem reports, and demanded the strictest punishment for those responsible.

FAIMA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the dignity, mental health, and safety of every doctor in India and urged the Government of Maharashtra, the police, and health authorities to act decisively.
