EU Nations Approve Tougher Migration Rules, Clear Path for Offshore ‘Return Hubs’
European Union member states on Monday endorsed a major overhaul of the bloc’s migration rules, paving the way for the creation of “return hubs” outside the 27-nation bloc to process and repatriate failed asylum-seekers.
The measures — backed by interior ministers during a meeting in Brussels — are part of a broader package proposed by the European Commission amid mounting public and political pressure across Europe to tighten border controls and reduce irregular migration.
Under the plan, individuals whose asylum claims are rejected could be transferred to facilities in non-EU countries to speed up deportation procedures. Supporters say the system will help ease the burden on EU states struggling with overcrowded reception centres, while critics warn it raises legal and human rights concerns.
The proposals will now be sent to the European Parliament for approval before they can take effect.
