Djokovic Beats Sinner to Set Up Australian Open Final Clash With Alcaraz
Novak Djokovic defeated defending champion Jannik Sinner in a gripping five-set semifinal to book a blockbuster Australian Open final against Carlos Alcaraz.
The Serbian relied on his experience to keep alive his bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title, winning 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in four hours and nine minutes at Rod Laver Arena.
Earlier, world number one Carlos Alcaraz reached the final after surviving a five-set battle against Alexander Zverev.
Emotional Victory
Djokovic was visibly emotional after his hard-fought victory, describing the moment as surreal.
“I’m lost for words right now, to be honest. It feels surreal,” he said. “I have tremendous respect for him. He pushed me to the limit. The level of intensity and quality was extremely high, and I knew that was the only way for me to have a chance tonight.”
Light-Hearted Exchange
Revealing a brief exchange with Alcaraz after the match, Djokovic said the Spaniard had apologised for delaying the start of his semifinal.
“He told me, ‘I’m sorry to delay the start of your match.’ I told him, ‘I’m an old man. I need to go to sleep earlier,’” Djokovic said with a smile.
Historic Milestone
The victory sent Djokovic into his 39th Grand Slam final and made him the oldest man in the Open era to reach the Australian Open final in Melbourne, where he is a 10-time champion.
It will also be his first Grand Slam final since Wimbledon 2024. Djokovic has been chasing a historic 25th major title since winning the 2023 US Open, which would see him surpass Margaret Court’s record.
Looking Ahead to the Final
Turning his focus to the final, Djokovic said he is preparing for a tough challenge against Alcaraz.
“I know I have to come back in a couple of days to fight the world number one,” he said. “I just hope I will have enough gas to stay toe-to-toe with him. That’s my desire, and then let God decide the winner.”
The highly anticipated final is expected to be one of the highlights of the tournament.
