A powerful explosion near Lal Qila (Red Fort) Metro Station in Delhi on Monday evening left eight people dead and 12 injured, officials confirmed. The Delhi Fire Services received a call about the blast, which occurred near Gate No. 1 of the metro station, around 7 PM. The explosion, which took place inside a Hyundai i20 car near the Subhash Marg traffic signal, also set several nearby vehicles ablaze.

Authorities quickly cordoned off the area, and multiple emergency and security teams rushed to the scene. The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined.

Home Minister Amit Shah: “All Possibilities Being Investigated”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the explosion was being thoroughly investigated “taking all possibilities into account.”

“Teams from the Delhi Crime Branch and Delhi Special Branch arrived at the spot within ten minutes. The NSG, NIA, and forensic experts have begun a comprehensive probe, and all nearby CCTV footage is being examined,” Shah said.

Shah also confirmed he was in constant contact with Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha and Intelligence Bureau Director.

PM Modi Reviews Situation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the situation and spoke with Amit Shah about the ongoing investigation.

“Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover at the earliest. Those affected are being assisted by authorities,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

Police Commissioner’s Statement

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said that the blast occurred around 6:52 PM, when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light near Red Fort.

“An explosion happened in that vehicle, damaging several nearby vehicles. All agencies — including FSL and NIA — are at the site and investigating,” he said.

Golcha added that the situation was being closely monitored, with continuous updates being shared with the Union Home Minister.

Nationwide High Alert Issued

In the aftermath of the explosion, several states — including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Punjab — have been placed on high alert. Railway stations across the country are also on precautionary alert, and Delhi’s Chandni Chowk market will remain closed on Tuesday.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has heightened security across all Delhi Metro stations, government buildings, the Indira Gandhi International Airport, and other key installations under its protection.

“The situation is being constantly monitored, and personnel are on standby,” the CISF said in a statement.

All police units in Gujarat have also been placed on alert, with enhanced patrolling orders issued, while Tamil Nadu has strengthened security at sensitive sites.

Investigations are ongoing as forensic teams continue to gather evidence to determine the cause and intent behind the Red Fort explosion.
