Delhi on red alert as IMD warns of 90 kmph winds, thunderstorms and heavy rain; Noida issues extreme weather advisory

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “extremely severe” weather warning for Delhi, cautioning that parts of the national capital could witness intense thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, and hailstorms within the next few hours. Wind speeds are expected to range between 70 and 90 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 100 kmph.

A red alert has been sounded as a powerful weather system advances towards Delhi from neighbouring Haryana. According to the IMD, satellite imagery shows a large cloud mass associated with thunderstorms and rainfall moving eastward towards the capital.

The weather disturbance has formed due to strong convective activity over Haryana and is expected to impact Delhi later in the evening. Meteorologists have warned that conditions could change rapidly after a day marked by scorching temperatures and dry weather.

Thunderstorms, rain and strong winds likely

Most parts of Delhi are expected to receive rainfall, with some isolated areas likely to experience moderate to heavy showers. Thunderstorms accompanied by frequent lightning activity are also forecast across the city.

The standout feature of the approaching system is the potential for damaging winds. Sustained wind speeds of 60–70 kmph are expected, while stronger gusts could reach up to 80 kmph or more in some locations. Such conditions may uproot trees, trigger dust storms, and cause damage to unsecured structures and outdoor objects.

Potential disruptions across the city

The IMD has warned that the severe weather could disrupt normal life across Delhi. Strong winds may bring down tree branches and dislodge loose items from rooftops and balconies. Lightning strikes could pose significant risks to those outdoors during the storm.

Commuters may face difficulties due to reduced visibility, waterlogging, and strong winds. Authorities have also cautioned that localized power outages are possible in areas most affected by lightning and high-speed winds.

Authorities urge caution

Given the severity of the forecast, residents have been advised to remain indoors during the peak storm period and avoid unnecessary travel. People are also urged to secure flower pots, outdoor furniture, hoardings, and other loose objects that could become hazardous in strong winds.

Heat persists before storm arrival

Despite the approaching weather system, Delhi continued to endure intense heat on Wednesday. Temperatures hovered around 41.8°C, with the maximum likely to cross 44°C. Humidity levels remained relatively low, while moderate winds prevailed ahead of the expected storm activity.

The IMD has urged citizens to stay updated through official weather advisories and follow safety precautions as the severe weather system moves across the region.
