In a surprising move, production house Vyjayanthi Movies has announced that Deepika Padukone will not return for the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the makers wrote:

“This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”

The wording sparked speculation among fans, with many interpreting it as a subtle dig at the actress’ lack of commitment. Deepika played a pivotal role in the first film alongside Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Disha Patani, and was expected to reprise it in the sequel.

The announcement follows reports that Deepika also exited Prabhas’ upcoming film Spirit, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, amid disagreements over work hours, revenue sharing, and language preferences. She was later replaced by Triptii Dimri.

Fans reacted with a mix of disappointment and suggestions for replacements. Some recommended Keerthy Suresh or Kalyani Priyadarshan, while others felt Deepika’s exit might benefit the franchise.
