‘Deep Concern’: India Reacts to US Action in Venezuela, Capture of President Maduro

India on Sunday said the recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of “deep concern,” reacting to the United States’ military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said New Delhi is closely monitoring the evolving situation.

“India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” the MEA said in a statement.

The ministry added that the Embassy of India in Caracas is in touch with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance.

The statement came a day after the Donald Trump-led US administration carried out a dramatic military strike in Venezuela, targeting the capital Caracas and other locations as part of what Washington described as a crackdown on “narco-terrorism.” The operation reportedly resulted in the capture of President Maduro and his wife, who were subsequently flown out of the country.

Following the operation, President Trump claimed that the United States would oversee Venezuela until a transition of power takes place.

Amid the rapidly unfolding situation, the MEA on Saturday issued a travel advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela.

“In view of recent developments in Venezuela, Indian nationals are strongly advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela,” the advisory said.

Indians currently in Venezuela have been asked to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements, and remain in contact with the Embassy of India in Caracas. The MEA shared emergency contact details, including the email address cons.caracas@mea.gov.in
and the phone number +58-412-9584288, for assistance.
