Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan will be the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) nominee for the Vice Presidential election scheduled for September 9.

The decision was taken on Sunday by the BJP Parliamentary Board, the party’s highest decision-making body, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Announcing the choice, BJP president JP Nadda said the 68-year-old leader’s name was finalised after “extensive discussions with NDA partners.” He added that senior BJP leaders had also reached out to Opposition parties. “They told us their decision would depend on the nominee. We are hopeful the Vice President will be elected by consensus,” Nadda said.

Radhakrishnan, a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore, has also served as BJP’s Tamil Nadu president. He was earlier the governor of Jharkhand (2023–24) with additional charge of Telangana, and briefly acted as Puducherry’s Lieutenant Governor.

The Vice Presidential post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21 citing health reasons. Nominations close on August 21.

At an August 7 NDA meeting, allies had authorised PM Modi and Nadda to finalise the candidate.
