Climate Change Posing Serious Challenges to Himachal Pradesh, Says CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday (February 24, 2026) warned that climate change is creating severe environmental risks for the hill state, citing a rise in extreme weather events such as cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, and the rapid retreat of glaciers.
Describing these developments as serious warning signs, Sukhu stressed the need for urgent corrective measures. He said any ecological disturbance in the Himalayas would have far-reaching consequences not only for Himachal Pradesh but for the entire country.
Recalling the devastating monsoon disaster of 2023, the Chief Minister noted that more than 23,000 houses were destroyed. “Himachal Pradesh is not just a geographical entity but the soul of the Himalayas. Its glaciers, rivers, forests, and mountains define its identity and sustain millions beyond its borders,” he said.
Sukhu was speaking at the release of a report titled Scientific Assessment of Tackling Non-CO2 Emissions: Pathways for Himachal Pradesh.
Addressing inter-state issues, he said the state government would withhold progress on major projects such as the Kishau and Renuka dams until neighbouring states provide firm assurances on settling long-pending dues related to the Bhakra Beas Management Board.
Highlighting the government’s sustainability agenda, Sukhu reiterated the state’s commitment to becoming India’s first green energy state. He announced a target to generate 200 MW of solar power this year, supported by subsidies aimed at encouraging young entrepreneurs to invest in solar projects.
He also revealed that a one-megawatt green hydrogen plant is being established at Nalagarh in partnership with Oil India Limited, adding that Himachal Pradesh aims to position itself as a leader in green hydrogen production.
The Chief Minister further outlined measures to promote clean mobility, including the introduction of electric vehicles across government departments and a 40 percent subsidy to help convert 38,000 taxis into e-taxis.
On the sidelines of the event, two Memorandums of Agreement were signed with Dabur India Limited and Karan Singh Vaidh of Solan to encourage the cultivation and conservation of medicinal plants in the state.
