Chirag Paswan’s Journey: From Silver Screen Aspirations to Political Leadership

Born into a prominent political family, Chirag Kumar Paswan has carved a distinctive path from his early foray into films to becoming a key figure in Bihar’s political landscape.

Early Life and Film Beginnings

Chirag Paswan, elder son of veteran politician Ram Vilas Paswan, chose to explore his creativity by entering Bollywood in 2014. His debut film, Miley Naa Miley Hum, saw him in a leading role, accompanied by a cameo from his father. Although the movie did not perform well at the box office, it provided a unique platform for the young Paswan to experience film sets and connect with media in ways vastly different from political campaigning.

Despite the film’s failure, Chirag remained confident and publicly stated that he hadn’t entered the industry for commercial gain. Drawing inspiration from actors-turned-politicians like Suniel Shetty and Shatrughan Sinha, he believed his stint in cinema would enrich his public outreach and help him connect better with India’s youth.

Entry into Politics

Following his cinematic experiment, Chirag shifted focus in 2014 by taking on organizational responsibilities within the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), founded by his grandfather—Ram Chandra Paswan. He quickly became actively involved in strategizing, candidate selection, and party campaigns, gaining practical insight into India’s complex political fabric.

A Parliamentarian at 29

Chirag made his electoral debut in the 2014 General Elections by contesting from the Jamui constituency in Bihar. He secured victory at the age of 29, becoming one of the youngest Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. His campaign underscored promises of youth empowerment, employment, infrastructure development, and intensified scrutiny of local governance issues.

During his first parliamentary tenure, he raised questions on community development, rural electrification, and youth engagement. He also toured remote parts of his constituency to directly engage with residents and troubleshoot sectoral challenges at the grassroots level.

Leadership After Loss

After facing defeat from the Hajipur constituency in subsequent elections and the untimely passing of his father in 2020, Chirag took charge of the LJP as its national president. This marked a turning point: he inherited both the legacy and the responsibility to expand the party’s influence across Bihar.

Under his leadership, the party revived efforts on strengthening organizational structures and redefining its ideological stance. Emphasizing development, youth participation, and caste-neutral messaging, he led the party to contest multiple seat-sharing arrangements during the 2024 assembly elections. Though results were mixed, his continued presence underscored determination and political resilience.
