Chhattisgarh: Eight Maoists Killed in Encounter in Gariaband, Operation Underway
At least eight Maoists were killed on Thursday in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district, police said. The gunfight broke out during an anti-Naxalite operation in a forest under the Mainpur police station limits, according to Raipur Range Inspector General of Police Amresh Mishra.
Personnel from the Special Task Force (STF), CoBRA — the elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action of the CRPF — and state police units are part of the operation. Intermittent firing is still underway, the IGP told PTI.
The development comes a day after 16 Maoists surrendered in Narayanpur district, citing disillusionment with Maoist ideology and anger over atrocities committed against innocent tribals, Superintendent of Police Robinson Guria said.
More details on Thursday’s encounter are awaited.
