Centre Proposes Blue-Green Number Plates for Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles

The Centre on Thursday proposed a distinct category of number plates for vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel, marking a step toward promoting clean energy mobility.

According to a draft notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on June 26, hydrogen-powered private vehicles will feature number plates split into two colours: the top half in green and the bottom half in blue, with white lettering.

For commercial hydrogen vehicles, the same dual-tone design will apply, but the lettering will be in yellow. In the case of hydrogen-powered cabs, the number plates will have a black top half and blue bottom half, also with yellow lettering.

The ministry has invited objections and suggestions from stakeholders on the proposal.

This move follows the government’s earlier introduction of green number plates for electric vehicles (EVs). At present, hydrogen vehicles in India are primarily part of pilot projects backed by the government and international agencies.
