Canadian National Arrested in Hit-and-Run Death of Marathon Legend Fauja Singh
Punjab Police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of celebrated marathon runner Fauja Singh, affectionately known as the “Turbaned Tornado.”
The suspect, identified as Amritpal Singh, is a Canadian national who arrived in India eight days ago. According to officials, he recently purchased a white Toyota Fortuner (registration PB 20C 7100) from a resident of Kapurthala.
Authorities confirmed that Amritpal Singh hails from Dasupur village in the Kartarpur sub-division of Jalandhar district.
Fauja Singh, 114, was struck by the vehicle while walking along the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway on Monday. He sustained severe head injuries in the accident and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, Punjab Police launched an investigation and were able to trace and seize the white Toyota Fortuner involved in the crash earlier today. Singh was taken into custody shortly afterward.
An investigation is ongoing.
