Calcutta High Court Orders Cricketer Mohammed Shami to Pay ₹4 Lakh Monthly to Estranged Wife and Daughter

The Calcutta High Court has directed Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami to pay a total of ₹4 lakh per month in maintenance to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and their daughter, marking a significant development in the long-running legal battle between the two.

Court’s Order

As per the court ruling, Shami must pay:

  • ₹50,000 per month to Hasin Jahan as spousal maintenance

  • ₹3.5 lakh per month towards the education, care, and general welfare of their daughter

The order, passed by Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul), takes into account Shami’s current earnings as a national and international cricket player and his financial responsibility as a father and former spouse.

Background of the Case

The case stems from a series of allegations made by Hasin Jahan in 2018, which included charges of domestic violence, infidelity, and mental harassment. Since then, the couple has been embroiled in a bitter legal and personal conflict, with multiple cases filed in family and criminal courts.

Hasin Jahan had sought monthly maintenance of ₹10 lakh, citing Shami’s high income from international cricket, IPL, endorsements, and BCCI contracts. Shami’s legal team had argued the amount was excessive and unjustified.

After a review of income affidavits and documents, the court found ₹4 lakh to be a reasonable and fair amount.

Shami Yet to Respond

As of now, Mohammed Shami has not publicly commented on the court’s decision. His legal counsel has indicated that the cricketer is reviewing the order and may consider an appeal or adjustment request depending on further developments.

Public Reaction

The ruling has reignited public discussion around celebrity divorce cases, spousal rights, and the financial responsibilities of high-income earners in separation disputes. While many expressed support for Hasin Jahan, others called for privacy and dignity in the handling of such sensitive matters.

The Calcutta High Court’s decision underlines the judiciary’s emphasis on financial security for estranged spouses and children, especially when one partner enjoys significant earning capacity. As the legal proceedings continue, the court’s directive ensures consistent support for the minor child and upholds the maintenance rights of Hasin Jahan.
