BSNL Soft-Launches India’s First Indigenous SIM-less 5G FWA Service in Hyderabad
In a significant milestone for India’s 5G roadmap, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has soft-launched its Quantum 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in Hyderabad. The launch marks a major breakthrough in India’s push for self-reliant telecom infrastructure, as it is being billed as the country’s first SIM-less, fully indigenous 5G FWA solution.
The inaugural ceremony was held at BSNL’s Ameerpet Exchange, where the service was officially launched by Shri A. Robert J. Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL and MTNL. Senior officials from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), technical teams, and key industry stakeholders were present during the soft launch.
What Is Quantum 5G FWA?
The Quantum 5G Fixed Wireless Access service is designed to deliver high-speed internet connectivity to homes and enterprises without the need for a traditional SIM card or wired broadband connection. Utilizing advanced 5G radio technology and indigenous hardware, the FWA setup promises to extend fiber-like speed and ultra-low latency over wireless networks.
The technology will be especially beneficial in semi-urban and rural areas, where optical fiber penetration remains limited.

A Step Towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in Telecom
CMD Shri A. Robert J. Ravi emphasized that the launch of Quantum 5G is part of BSNL’s larger digital transformation strategy, aligning with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. “This is not just a technological upgrade; it is a bold step in reclaiming India’s digital sovereignty,” he stated.
He added that BSNL’s indigenous 5G initiatives are aimed at reducing dependency on foreign vendors and building a secure, affordable, and inclusive telecom network for all Indians.
What’s Next?
While the initial launch is limited to parts of Hyderabad, BSNL plans to expand Quantum 5G FWA to other metro cities and high-demand rural clusters in a phased manner. Commercial rollout is expected to follow after field testing and customer feedback from the pilot zone.
The state-run telecom giant is also working closely with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and other Indian technology partners to enhance the FWA platform and introduce AI-driven smart home features in future versions.
