BCCI Plans ‘Honest Conversations’ with Kohli, Rohit as 2027 World Cup Remains Uncertain: ‘Both Will Be Pushing 40’

When Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma jointly announced their retirement from T20Is following India’s triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, it appeared to be a calculated move to prolong their ODI and Test careers. But just months later, both legends stepped away from Test cricket within days of each other, sparking speculation that they were now fully focused on one last shot at glory — the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, the only ICC trophy they haven’t won together.

However, that path to redemption now looks uncertain.

As India undergoes a rapid transition in Tests, a similar evolution in the ODI setup appears inevitable. With young talent consistently making their mark, there’s growing uncertainty over whether Kohli and Rohit — both of whom will be nearing 40 by the next World Cup — will be part of the team’s plans.

The disappointment of the 2023 World Cup final loss to Australia still lingers. That edition was seen as Kohli’s shot at a second ODI World Cup title and Rohit’s long-awaited first. While Kohli recently declared, during an RCB event ahead of IPL 2025, that winning the 2027 World Cup is his next big goal, reports suggest the BCCI isn’t fully aligned with that vision — at least not yet.

According to a PTI report, discussions regarding Kohli and Rohit’s ODI future are expected to take place soon. A BCCI source stated:

“Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time.”

Game Time Could Be the Deciding Factor

One of the biggest obstacles facing the two veterans is the limited number of ODIs India will play before the next World Cup. Between now and the end of 2026, India is scheduled to play just 27 ODIs, many of which are interspersed between heavy Test and T20I commitments. With Kohli and Rohit now playing selectively — and mainly in ODIs — their ability to find and maintain form could be impacted.

Their next possible appearance together in an ODI XI is in October 2025, when India tour Australia for a series of three ODIs and five T20Is. This will be followed by three ODIs against South Africa in November and another three against New Zealand in the Nov–Dec window. While the gaps between series may not seem too long, for players nearing the twilight of their careers, consistency and rhythm are harder to maintain without regular match time.

BCCI: No Forced Decisions, But Conversations Loom

Despite all the uncertainty, the BCCI has no intention of forcing either player into a decision. Their contributions to Indian cricket are too significant to be overlooked. But professional discussions will take place to assess their mindset, fitness, and overall role in the team’s ODI strategy.

“Both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white-ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything,” the source added.
“So, I don’t think anybody is going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically.”

While the dream of lifting the 2027 World Cup trophy together remains alive for both stalwarts, whether it aligns with India’s vision for the future remains to be seen.
