BCCI announces ₹51 crore reward for India’s maiden Women’s World Cup triumph
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a cash award of ₹51 crore for the Indian women’s cricket team after their historic World Cup win on Sunday. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, clinching their first-ever World Cup title after earlier heartbreaks in 2005 and 2017.
The reward from BCCI is significantly higher than the ICC’s prize money of USD 4.48 million (≈ ₹39.78 crore) for the tournament winners.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision, saying the board wanted to recognise the team’s achievement in winning “a highly competitive global tournament” on home soil.
“BCCI is elated. Without touching anything from the ICC’s kitty, we are independently rewarding the players, selectors and support staff with ₹51 crore,” Saikia told ANI, crediting ICC chairman Jay Shah for raising the tournament’s official prize pool by 300% ahead of the event.
Dominant performance in the final
India delivered an all-round display to outclass South Africa:
-
India 298/7 — powered by Shafali Verma’s 87
-
South Africa 246 all out — Laura Wolvaardt scored a century, but it wasn’t enough
-
Deepti Sharma starred with a five-wicket haul
-
Shafali Verma was named Player of the Match for her 87 runs and two wickets
The title marks a landmark moment for Indian women’s cricket, with the victory celebrated in front of a packed home crowd.
