Babar Azam Under Fire as Pakistan Voices Demand Accountability: ‘Accept Your Mistakes’

Pakistan batter Babar Azam has faced renewed criticism following the team’s narrow two-wicket defeat to England in their T20 World Cup Super 8 match in Pallekele on Tuesday, with former cricketers questioning both his recent form and role in the side.

Despite being the leading run-scorer in T20I history, Babar has struggled in the 2026 T20 World Cup, scoring just 91 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 112.34. In the clash against England, he made 25 off 24 balls before being bowled by Jamie Overton, a dismissal that drew sharp reactions from commentators.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim was particularly critical, describing the manner of Babar’s dismissal as unacceptable for a player of his experience.

“After facing 24 balls, getting out like that is criminal. He is such a senior player,” Imad said during a television discussion, adding that senior players must take responsibility during high-pressure tournaments. He also raised concerns about Babar’s impact in major ICC events, arguing that the team needed more decisive contributions from its established stars.

Veteran pacer Mohammad Amir, while not naming Babar directly, questioned the prolonged backing of certain core players despite inconsistent performances.

“For the last two years, we’ve been discussing how these four or five players have been given enough opportunities, but the results haven’t followed,” Amir said on the program.

Former batter Ahmed Shehzad echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of accountability among senior players.

“Big players accept their mistakes. Despite full support from the board, performances have not improved,” he remarked.

Pakistan’s defeat has placed their semi-final prospects under pressure, intensifying the spotlight on the team’s senior batters and overall strategy as the tournament progresses.
