Auckland Welcomes 2026 First as World Rings in the New Year Under Mixed Emotions

Auckland became the world’s first major city to usher in 2026, lighting up the skyline with a spectacular fireworks display from New Zealand’s tallest structure, the Sky Tower. Around 3,500 fireworks were set off over nearly five minutes, marking the beginning of the New Year in the South Pacific region. Midnight struck in Auckland almost 18 hours before the iconic ball drop at New York’s Times Square, making countries in this region the first to bid farewell to 2025.

Australia Celebrates Amid Shadow of Deadly Shooting

Two hours after New Zealand, the eastern coast of Australia welcomed 2026, though celebrations in Sydney took place under the shadow of a recent tragedy. The festivities followed what is being described as Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades.

On December 14, an attack targeting a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach left 15 people dead and around 40 injured. As a result, New Year celebrations were marked by heightened security and solemn remembrance.

A heavy police presence was deployed around the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with officers visibly carrying advanced firearms—an unprecedented sight for the annual event. Before midnight, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the victims, and images of a menorah were projected onto the bridge’s pylons.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns urged people not to give in to fear, saying low turnout would amount to a victory for extremists.

Muted Celebrations in Indonesia and Hong Kong

In Indonesia, New Year festivities were scaled down following devastating floods and landslides on Sumatra that claimed more than 1,100 lives. In the capital Jakarta, traditional celebrations were replaced with prayer-focused events for the victims. Bali also canceled concerts and fireworks, opting instead for cultural dance performances.

Hong Kong likewise marked the New Year quietly after a deadly fire in November killed 161 people. The usual fireworks over Victoria Harbour were canceled, and a three-minute light show was displayed across eight major buildings instead.

Traditions and Snowfall Across Asia and Europe

In Tokyo, Japan, the New Year was welcomed with the ringing of bells at Buddhist temples, while in Seoul, South Korea, crowds gathered at the Bosingak Pavilion for the traditional bell-ringing ceremony and countdown.

Across Europe, winter added its own charm to the celebrations. In Berlin, snowfall did not deter people from gathering near the Brandenburg Gate and the cathedral, where revelers took selfies and built snowmen.

Greece and Cyprus opted for low-noise fireworks, drone displays and light shows in place of traditional crackers, aiming to reduce disturbance for children and pets.

Tight Security in New York

In the United States, New York City put additional counter-terrorism measures in place for the Times Square ball drop. The New York Police Department said the heightened security was precautionary and not linked to any specific threat.

After the ball drop, the celebration will feature red, white and blue lighting to preview events marking America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. At the same time, Zohran Mamdani is set to be sworn in as New York City’s mayor at the start of 2026, with two separate inauguration ceremonies planned.

As the world welcomed 2026, celebrations reflected a blend of joy, remembrance and resilience across continents.
