At Least 40 Killed in Gunmen’s Attack on Village in Nigeria’s Taraba State

At least 40 people were killed when gunmen attacked a village in Nigeria’s northeastern Taraba state on Friday afternoon, Amnesty International said.

A large group of armed men stormed Binnari village, according to a police statement issued on Saturday.

Amnesty International said police had initially confirmed 10 deaths, but the toll rose after additional bodies were recovered later on Saturday.

The attackers invaded the village, firing heavily and looting food supplies from shops, police said.

Northern Nigeria has witnessed a rise in attacks by heavily armed criminal gangs, locally known as bandits. The groups frequently raid villages, abduct residents for ransom and steal livestock, fuelling insecurity across the region.
