At least ten people have died in rain-related incidents across Maharashtra in the past 24 hours, while more than 11,800 were rescued from various districts, officials told PTI on Sunday. Mumbai has also experienced heavy rainfall since Saturday.

Fatalities and Evacuations

Four deaths were reported in Nashik district, including three from a house collapse. Dharashiv and Ahilyanagar recorded two deaths each, while Jalna and Yavatmal each reported one fatality.

Marathwada, one of the hardest-hit regions, saw rising inflows into the Jayakwadi dam on the Godavari river, prompting authorities to open all gates. Around 7,000 people were evacuated from Paithan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar amid flood fears. The Harsul circle alone recorded 196 mm of rainfall in 24 hours.

Other Marathwada districts, including Beed, Nanded, and Parbhani, also received heavy downpours. Sixteen NDRF teams have been deployed across Maharashtra, with two more on standby in Pune. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the situation, instructing authorities to step up relief operations in eight districts of Marathwada and Solapur.

Rain Situation in Mumbai

Mumbai experienced intermittent heavy showers on Sunday, with some localities recording over 50 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 1 pm, according to the BMC. Traffic and rail services remained largely unaffected. Average rainfall in the city was 47.47 mm, with western suburbs receiving 53.61 mm and eastern suburbs 37.92 mm.

Neighboring Thane and Palghar districts also reported heavy rainfall. In Bhiwandi taluka of Thane, 262 people from 71 families were rescued.

Rescue Operations Across Districts

In Beed, 12 people stranded at Sangvi temple in Aashti were rescued by the NDRF. Around 970 residents in Nanded Municipal Corporation were moved to safer areas. The Godavari river in Nanded was reported at nearly 354 metres, while continued release from the Sina Kolegaon dam caused flooding in Paranda, prompting evacuation of 3,615 people.

Excessive rainfall was reported in 189 revenue circles across six Marathwada districts, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Dharashiv, Jalna, Beed, Latur, Nanded, Hingoli, and Parbhani. At 10:30 pm, the Jayakwadi dam’s discharge rose to 2.92 lakh cusecs, with inflows exceeding 3 lakh cusecs.

In Nashik, the Godavari crossed warning levels, submerging temples in the Ramkund area. Authorities rescued 21 people from affected locations. The IMD has issued a red alert for Nashik, warning of heavy showers with strong winds through Monday, with more rain forecast until October 4.
