Assam Civil Service Officer Arrested for Amassing Wealth 400 Times Salary: CM
Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora, arrested on Monday on corruption charges, had amassed wealth nearly 400 times greater than her official income, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.
The Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell recovered over ₹90 lakh in cash and jewellery worth more than ₹1 crore during raids at Bora’s Guwahati residence and a rented house in Barpeta, officials said.
Sarma alleged that Bora had allotted lands belonging to local Hindu residents, including Vaishnavite Satras, to suspected infiltrators.
“Bora had been under discreet surveillance for six months following complaints of questionable land transactions. During her posting in Barpeta, she facilitated illegal registration of government and Satra lands in the names of encroachers,” the CM said.
A 2019-batch officer from Golaghat, Bora previously worked as a lecturer at a District Institute of Education and Training before joining the civil service. She began her career in Karbi Anglong, later served in Barpeta, and was posted as Circle Officer of Goroimari in Kamrup at the time of her arrest.
The vigilance team also searched the home of Surajit Deka, a Lat Mandal at Barpeta Revenue Circle, suspected of aiding Bora in land deals. Investigators believe he acted as a conduit in several transactions.
The raids followed a complaint by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), led by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, which alleged that Bora maintained a “rate list” for land services, charging bribes from a few thousand rupees for maps to several lakhs for altering land records.
Officials said seized cash, gold, and documents are under assessment, and further arrests are possible as the probe expands. Sarma added that punitive measures beyond dismissal are being pursued to ensure accountability under law.
