Asia Cup 2025 Star Abhishek Sharma Shows Striking Similarities to Yuvraj Singh
Legendary India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh heaped praise on his protégé Abhishek Sharma, commenting “Single bhi lelo Maharaj (Take a single as well)” on the young left-hander’s Instagram post. Sharma, from Amritsar, enjoyed a dream run in the Asia Cup 2025, finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer with 314 runs in seven matches and earning the Player of the Tournament award. His first act after receiving the accolade was to share a picture with his mentor, highlighting Yuvraj’s influence on his career.
Sharma dominated throughout the tournament, consistently giving India explosive starts alongside opening partner Shubman Gill. His only notable failure came in the final against Pakistan, where he scored just five runs. Known for his fearless boundary-hitting, Abhishek has steadily risen in T20I rankings and now holds the highest rating points in the format.
Simon Helmot, assistant coach of SunRisers Hyderabad, who has worked closely with both Sharma and Yuvraj, noted striking similarities between the two batters. “Neither goes out to train just to hit sixes; it comes naturally. Abhishek’s strength lies in balance, timing, and striking the ball with purpose,” he said. Helmot added that Sharma’s confidence and methodical approach have grown over years of match experience, allowing him to clear boundaries early while still focusing on game plans and situational awareness.
Abhishek’s preparation includes studying opposition bowlers in detail. Against Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi, for example, he timed a first-ball bouncer for a six, showcasing both his skill and meticulous planning. Helmot explained that Sharma approaches training with a calm, purposeful mindset, replicating match situations to ensure he is fully prepared.
At SunRisers Hyderabad, Helmot highlighted the impact of the “Travishek” opening pair with Travis Head, noting how their aggressive style has transformed the powerplay dynamics in the IPL. “Both benefit from each other, creating uncertainty for the opposition and instilling fear in the early overs,” he said.
Abhishek’s rise is a combination of raw talent, disciplined training, and mentorship from Yuvraj Singh, who has been pivotal in shaping him into one of India’s most exciting young batters.
