ASEAN Summit: Trump Arrives in Malaysia, Modi Attends Virtually, Thai-Cambodia Peace Deal Signed

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit began in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with US President Donald Trump arriving on Sunday to attend the three-day regional gathering. While Trump will hold trade talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, his anticipated meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not take place, as Modi is attending the summit virtually.

Trump in Malaysia

  • Trump’s agenda includes trade negotiations, signing deals, and regional peace initiatives. He is scheduled to sign a trade deal with Malaysia and oversee the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, months after deadly clashes between the two countries.

  • On the sidelines, Trump is expected to meet Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to strengthen bilateral ties.

  • As part of his Asia tour, Trump will also visit Japan and South Korea and indicated he might meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the first time since 2019 during the APEC summit in Busan.

Modi’s Virtual Attendance

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not travel to Kuala Lumpur and will participate online, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts and ongoing Deepavali celebrations, according to Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim.

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at key meetings, including the East Asian Summit on October 27.

  • Modi’s absence means the anticipated bilateral meeting with Trump over trade issues will not occur.

East Timor Joins ASEAN

  • After 14 years of campaigning, East Timor (Timor-Leste) officially became ASEAN’s 11th member state during the summit.

  • Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao joined the bloc’s leaders for the signing ceremony, calling the moment “a dream realised” and “the beginning of an inspiring new chapter.”

  • Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim said East Timor’s accession “completes the ASEAN family — reaffirming our shared destiny and regional kinship.”

  • East Timor, the youngest nation in Southeast Asia, gained independence from Indonesia in 2002 after 24 years of occupation. Its President, Jose Ramos-Horta, first applied for ASEAN membership in 2011.

  • The country faces challenges including high inequality, malnutrition, unemployment, and infrastructure gaps, which are seen as critical for full participation in ASEAN’s economic community.

Thailand-Cambodia Peace Deal

  • Trump will also witness the signing of a peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia, months after deadly clashes killed over 40 people and displaced 300,000 residents.

  • The signing was rescheduled to Sunday to accommodate both leaders, following the death of the Thai Queen mother, with Trump extending condolences via Truth Social.

  • The ceasefire agreement, partly brokered by the US, ended five days of fighting between the neighboring nations.

The ASEAN summit, held biannually, brings together member states to discuss economic, political, and socio-cultural issues. The bloc now includes Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and East Timor. The 2025 summit runs from October 26 to 28 in Kuala Lumpur.
