Another Shocking Killing in Patna: BJP Leader Surendra Kewat Shot Dead Near Farm in Broad Daylight
Just days after the murder of businessman Gopal Khemka rocked Patna, Bihar’s capital is once again grappling with a gruesome killing — this time, of local BJP leader Surendra Kewat, who was shot dead late Saturday night by bike-borne assailants in Sheikhpura village, located along the Bihta–Sarmera State Highway-78.
According to a Live Hindustan report, 52-year-old Kewat was returning from his field after turning off an irrigation pump when he was ambushed and shot four times at close range by two men on a motorcycle. He was immediately rushed to AIIMS Patna by family members but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
What Happened?
Police sources said the attack occurred near a roadside cabin where Kewat often stopped while tending to his farmland. The assailants, who were reportedly waiting for him, fled the scene immediately after firing.
Station House Officer (SHO) RK Pal confirmed that police are scanning CCTV footage and conducting technical surveillance to identify the culprits. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
Who Was Surendra Kewat?
Kewat, a veterinarian and farmer, was a local BJP functionary in the Punpun block of Patna district. While he did not hold any formal party post, he was known to be politically active and influential in his region. He lived with his family in Sheikhpura village.
Two High-Profile Murders in a Week
The killing comes just a week after the high-profile murder of businessman Gopal Khemka, who was shot dead outside his home near Gandhi Maidan in central Patna. The back-to-back killings have triggered public concern and political outrage over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state capital.
Tejashwi Yadav Slams NDA Govt
Former deputy chief minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav strongly criticized the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government over the latest incident.
Taking to X, he wrote:
“And now, a BJP leader shot dead in Patna! What to say, and to whom? Is anyone in the NDA government willing to listen to the truth or admit their mistakes?”
He also questioned the silence of top BJP leaders in the state:
“Everyone knows about the CM’s health, but what are the two useless BJP deputy chief ministers doing? No statement from the corrupt Bhunja-DK party?”
