Air India Flight From Kochi Overshoots Mumbai Runway Amid Heavy Rain; All Safe
An Air India A320 aircraft (Flight AI 2744) from Kochi to Mumbai overshot the runway during landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday morning, amid intense rainfall in the city.
According to initial reports, the aircraft veered off the runway shortly after touchdown on Runway 09/27 due to low visibility and wet surface conditions. Sources said three tyres burst during the landing, and there may be damage to one of the engines. Despite this, the plane safely taxied to the terminal gate, and all passengers and crew disembarked safely with no injuries reported.
Air India Issues Statement
In a statement, Air India said:
“Flight AI 2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority.”
Emergency Response and Runway Closure
CSMIA confirmed the incident and said emergency protocols were activated immediately:
“An incoming aircraft from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at CSMIA at 09:27 hours on 21 July 2025. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed. All passengers and crew are safe. Minor damage was reported on primary Runway 09/27.”
To avoid major disruptions, airport operations were shifted to the secondary Runway 14/32, which remains active while repairs and safety checks are conducted on the main runway.
Operations Continue with Minimal Disruption
Though the incident caused a brief operational adjustment, flight schedules have largely remained unaffected, thanks to quick activation of the backup runway. An investigation is underway to assess the extent of technical damage to the aircraft and the runway surface.
The incident comes as Mumbai battles continued monsoon downpours, impacting road, rail, and air traffic across the city.
