Air India Crash: Black Box Recovered; Probe Launched Into Deadly Ahmedabad Tragedy That Killed 260

11

Days after the tragic crash of an Air India flight that killed at least 260 people, investigators have recovered the aircraft’s black box on Friday.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed just 33 seconds after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, slamming into a nearby residential complex.

DGCA Orders Safety Checks Amid India’s Deadliest Air Disaster

In response, India’s aviation regulator — the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) — has ordered enhanced safety inspections of Air India’s entire Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 fleet. The move comes as the government intensifies efforts to prevent a repeat of what is now considered one of the deadliest aviation disasters in India’s history.

Black Box Found, Decoding Begins

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has begun analyzing the flight’s black box data “with full force.” The black box — comprising the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) — was located on the rooftop of a building near the wreckage.

The data will help determine if the crash was caused by a technical failure or human error, offering insights into flight controls, engine performance, altitude, and cockpit conversations in the final moments.

High-Level Probe Panel Formed

A high-level multi-disciplinary committee has been constituted to probe the incident. The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated:

“The Committee will examine causes of the crash, assess current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and recommend comprehensive safety reforms.”

The panel will have access to flight maintenance logs, ATC recordings, black box data, and eyewitness testimonies. A final report is expected within three months.

PM Modi Visits Crash Site, Meets Survivor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site on Friday morning and later met the sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British-Indian national undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital.

Modi also held a review meeting with senior officials to coordinate emergency response and assess the investigation progress.

Lone Survivor Recounts Horrifying Escape

Ramesh, the only survivor among 260 passengers, shared his experience in an interview with national broadcaster Doordarshan:

“It felt like the aircraft got stuck right after takeoff. The lights flickered, it tried to gain speed but couldn’t lift properly before crashing. I was near an emergency exit. It broke open after impact. I undid my seatbelt, pushed myself out, and ran.”

His brother, who was traveling with him, did not survive.

What Is a Black Box and Why It Matters

The “black box” refers to two key devices:

  • Flight Data Recorder (FDR) – Captures technical flight details like airspeed, engine power, altitude, and control settings.

  • Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) – Records pilot conversations, alarms, and cockpit noise.

These instruments are critical in piecing together the sequence of events that led to the crash. Aviation expert Paul Fromme emphasized its importance in understanding the plane’s final moments.

Reports suggest the pilot may have issued a “Mayday” distress call — an internationally recognized emergency signal indicating imminent danger.
