Legendary Indian composer A.R. Rahman has been officially confirmed as the Guest of Honour at the World Soundtrack Awards 2025, to be held in Ghent, Belgium, this October. The announcement marks a historic moment for Indian and global music fans, as Rahman will join a distinguished roster of past honorees, recognized for their exceptional contributions to the world of film music. This recognition celebrates Rahman’s transformative impact on global cinema, spanning more than three decades and including scores for Bollywood, Hollywood, and beyond.

In his remarks following the announcement, Rahman reflected on his incredible journey—from his early days in Chennai’s music studios to becoming an internationally acclaimed composer. “Music has always been my spiritual escape and my way of connecting with humanity,” Rahman said. “Being recognized by the World Soundtrack Awards is truly humbling, especially in a space that brings together so many cultures and musical philosophies.” The 2025 ceremony will feature a special orchestral performance of Rahman’s most iconic works, including selections from Roja, Lagaan, Bombay, 127 Hours, and of course, the Oscar-winning score from Slumdog Millionaire.

One of the major highlights of Rahman’s career remains his unforgettable work on Danny Boyle’s 2008 global hit Slumdog Millionaire. The score, blending Indian classical, electronic, and world music elements, earned Rahman two Academy Awards—for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“Jai Ho”)—cementing his place in international film music history. Speaking about the experience, Rahman shared: “Working on Slumdog Millionaire was a turning point. I had creative freedom, cultural relevance, and a director who trusted my instincts. It allowed me to experiment while staying authentic to the story.”

Rahman’s body of work is widely praised for its fusion of traditional Indian music with electronic, orchestral, and contemporary styles. He has collaborated with global artists such as Mick Jagger, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Hans Zimmer, and Dido. From composing for international projects like Elizabeth: The Golden Age and The Hundred-Foot Journey to scoring Indian blockbusters like Dil Se, Swades, Guru, and Ponniyin Selvan, Rahman continues to reinvent his sound with each project.

The World Soundtrack Awards, organized annually by the Film Fest Ghent, is one of the world’s premier platforms recognizing excellence in film music composition. Past Guests of Honour have included Howard Shore, Carter Burwell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Hans Zimmer. With A.R. Rahman’s selection in 2025, the event is set to spotlight the global influence of South Asian composers and underline the growing recognition of non-Western musical traditions in international cinema.
