WSJ Reports Putin’s Proposal For Summit With Trump And Xi Jinping
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed holding a summit next month with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to negotiate an end to the four-year war in Ukraine on terms favourable to Moscow, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Citing a former Russian intelligence officer, the newspaper said on Sunday that Putin floated the proposal during a telephone conversation with Trump on October 9. The call also reportedly resulted in an agreement for the United States to purchase Russian diesel and facilitate its sale on international markets.
The reported proposal comes as Washington pursues discussions with Moscow and Beijing on nuclear disarmament. Trump said on Thursday that the United States was holding talks with Russia and China aimed at denuclearisation.
Speaking in an interview with Newsmax, Trump confirmed the discussions, while the outlet reported that he had also spoken with Xi about denuclearisation.
Russia and the United States possess the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals, while China has significantly expanded its nuclear capabilities in recent years, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
However, The Wall Street Journal report did not establish whether Putin’s proposed three-way summit was connected to the ongoing discussions on nuclear disarmament.
The proposal, if pursued, would bring the leaders of the three major nuclear powers together at a time when diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine war and address global security concerns remain a priority.
