HDFC Bank Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha Seeks To Step Down After Over 30 Years

Kaizad Bharucha, Deputy Managing Director of HDFC Bank, has sought to step down from the bank’s services with effect from December 31, 2026, bringing an association spanning more than three decades to an end.

Bharucha’s decision comes amid the process to select the bank’s next managing director and chief executive officer (MD and CEO). He was among the contenders for the top position, but Anup Bagchi was recommended for the role by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

In a regulatory filing on Saturday, HDFC Bank said its Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee (GNRC) and board of directors had accepted Bharucha’s request at their respective meetings held on October 16 and October 17.

The bank said the request would now be forwarded to the RBI for approval.

HDFC Bank Begins Leadership Transition

Bharucha’s proposed departure comes at a crucial time for HDFC Bank as it prepares for a leadership transition. The selection of the next MD and CEO is a key development for the country’s largest private-sector lender by several measures.

With Bagchi emerging as the preferred candidate following the RBI’s recommendation, the bank is moving ahead with the process of determining its future leadership.

Bharucha had been associated with HDFC Bank for more than 30 years and served as its Deputy Managing Director. His exit, subject to regulatory approval, would mark the end of a long tenure at the institution.

HDFC Bank Continues Post-Merger Integration

The leadership changes come as HDFC Bank continues to navigate the integration of its banking and mortgage businesses following its merger with Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) in July 2023.

The merger brought HDFC’s housing finance operations into the banking business, significantly expanding the lender’s scale and operations.

The integration has remained an important focus for the bank as it works to align its operations, manage growth and strengthen its position in the financial services sector.

Bharucha’s proposed departure and the process to appoint a new MD and CEO are therefore significant developments for the lender as it enters its next phase of leadership and business strategy.
