Seven Sworn In As Delhi High Court Judges, Court Strength Rises To 50

Seven judicial officers took oath as judges of the Delhi High Court on Monday, taking the court’s working strength to 50 against a sanctioned strength of 60.

Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya administered the oath to Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma-I, Bharat Parashar, Dr Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj.

Nivedita Anil Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena have been appointed as permanent judges, while Sanjay Sharma-I, Bharat Parashar, Dr Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj have been appointed as additional judges.

The swearing-in followed the Centre’s notification on Saturday approving the appointment of seven judicial officers to the Delhi High Court.

The Supreme Court collegium had recommended eight names for elevation on September 10. However, the Centre cleared seven appointments and withheld approval for Gurvinder Pal Singh.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments through a post on X.

Who Are The Newly Appointed Judges?

Before taking oath, Arun Bhardwaj was serving as the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court, while Bharat Parashar was the Secretary General of the Supreme Court.

Nisha Sahay Saxena was the Principal District and Sessions Judge of the Rohini North-West District, while Sanjay Sharma-I served as Principal District and Sessions Judge of the Karkardooma North-East District.

Dinesh Bhatt was serving as Principal District Judge-cum-Special Judge (Prevention of Corruption Act) (CBI) at the Rouse Avenue Courts.

Nivedita Anil Sharma and Dr Aditi Choudhary had retired before their appointments were notified.

According to people familiar with the development, Sharma, Choudhary and Gurvinder Pal Singh had earlier been recommended by the Delhi High Court collegium for elevation to the High Court.
