Reform UK’s Nigel Farage steps down, calls by-election amid funding row

Nigel Farage on Tuesday announced he is resigning as the Member of Parliament for Clacton and will contest a by-election to clear his name over allegations linked to millions of pounds in undeclared donations.

The surprise move comes as Farage faces a parliamentary standards investigation into whether he breached rules by failing to declare financial gifts, including a £5 million ($6.7 million) donation from Thailand-based cryptocurrency businessman Christopher Harborne. A finding against him could have led to his suspension or expulsion from Parliament.

“I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all. I have not misused public money,” Farage said in a statement, insisting voters in Clacton should judge his conduct.

Calling the contest “a people versus the establishment by-election,” the Reform UK leader said he was confident of winning another mandate from constituents.

Farage comfortably won the Clacton seat in the 2024 general election with 46.2% of the vote. His prospects of reelection appear strong after the governing Labour Party, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats all indicated they would not field candidates in the by-election.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed the move as “a desperate stunt,” while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused Farage of trying to distract attention from the allegations against him.

The investigation centres on whether the £5 million donation from Christopher Harborne should have been declared under parliamentary rules. Farage has maintained the money was a personal gift used to fund his security before he entered Parliament and therefore did not require disclosure.

The Reform UK leader is also facing scrutiny over his financial links with George Cottrell, a longtime associate and convicted fraudster who reportedly helped fund staffing, security and accommodation before the 2024 election.

Despite triggering the by-election, Farage’s legal and political troubles may not end there. The parliamentary standards inquiry is expected to resume even if he wins reelection, while reports have suggested authorities are examining the source of the Harborne donation.

One of Britain’s most influential and polarising politicians, Farage was a leading figure in the successful 2016 Brexit campaign and has built Reform UK into a major political force on an anti-immigration platform. Although the party holds only eight seats in the House of Commons, it has topped several recent opinion polls, cementing Farage’s position as one of the most prominent figures in British politics.
