A massive fire nearly destroyed a luxury resort in the Dominican Republic on Friday, forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 tourists, authorities said.

Local media reported that an Italian tourist died in the blaze, while several others required medical attention.

The fire broke out at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe, a popular holiday destination on the country’s southeastern coast frequented by US and international visitors.

Authorities said around 1,690 guests were evacuated from the resort and moved to nearby hotels and accommodation facilities as emergency teams battled the flames.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The country’s Emergency Operations Center said the blaze appeared to spread quickly because of strong winds and the presence of thatched roofing in parts of the resort.

The nearby Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace resort was not affected by the fire and continued normal operations, officials said.
