India on Tuesday summoned US Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks and lodged a strong protest over the attack on a commercial tanker off the coast of Oman that left three Indian crew members missing. Meeks was called to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as US Ambassador Sergio Gor was away from New Delhi. Sources said no formal demarche was issued during the meeting.

The MEA had earlier condemned the attack on the tanker Settebello, though its statement did not identify the party responsible. However, people familiar with the matter said the vessel was reportedly struck by US forces while attempting to bypass an American blockade of Iranian ports.

“We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, earlier today. Of the 24 Indian crew on board, 21 Indians have been rescued thus far and three Indians are reportedly missing,” the ministry said in a statement.

According to the MEA, the Indian Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring developments and is coordinating with Omani authorities involved in the ongoing search-and-rescue operation.

India also expressed concern over the escalating security situation in West Asia, describing attacks on commercial shipping as “deeply worrisome” and calling for immediate de-escalation.

“The targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through international waterways, in keeping with international law, must be restored at the earliest,” the statement said.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) initially reported that the tanker suffered an engine-room fire around 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar, Oman. British maritime security firm Vanguard later said the vessel issued a distress signal after being struck by a missile, which triggered the fire. The Oman Navy subsequently responded to the emergency call and provided assistance to the tanker.
