Rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir is set for a major upgrade with the launch of a new Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu and Srinagar on April 30. The Ministry of Railways has confirmed that operations will begin this week, marking a key milestone for transport in one of India’s most challenging terrains.

The service is expected to make travel to the Kashmir Valley faster and more seamless, while boosting tourism and regional connectivity.

Easier travel via Jammu Tawi

The new arrangement is set to remove a long-standing inconvenience for passengers. Until now, travellers arriving at Jammu Tawi railway station often had to continue to Katra to board trains heading towards Srinagar.

With the new service, passengers will be able to change trains directly at Jammu Tawi, significantly simplifying the journey for both tourists and regular commuters.

Built for extreme weather

A key highlight of the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat is its all-weather capability. The train has been specially winterised to operate in extreme cold and snowfall — a crucial feature for the Kashmir Valley, where harsh weather frequently disrupts transport.

Faster journey time

The service is expected to cut travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to around five hours, offering a faster and more reliable alternative to road travel, which is often affected by terrain and weather conditions.

Safety and comfort features

The train comes equipped with modern amenities aimed at enhancing passenger safety and comfort, including:

  • CCTV cameras across all 20 coaches
  • Real-time surveillance linked to control centres
  • Automatic doors
  • GPS-based passenger information systems
  • Emergency communication facilities
  • Ergonomic seating and noise-reduction features

Infrastructure upgrades

Ahead of the launch, authorities have carried out extensive upgrades along the route, including track strengthening, advanced signalling systems and modern safety technologies to support operations in difficult terrain.

Boost for tourism

Improved rail connectivity is expected to make the Kashmir Valley more accessible, supporting tourism in a region known for its natural beauty, cultural heritage and cuisine.

As the April 30 launch nears, anticipation is building among residents, travellers and tourism stakeholders — many of whom see the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat as a transformative step for connectivity in the region.
