T20 World Cup 2026 Final: India thrash New Zealand to seal historic third title, become first back-to-back champions
India national cricket team have done it! The Men in Blue dominated the final to defeat New Zealand national cricket team and lift the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. India became the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cups and the first to claim the trophy on home soil, securing a historic third title.
India’s bowlers rattled New Zealand early. After the dismissal of Finn Allen, Jasprit Bumrah struck with the very first ball of his spell to remove Rachin Ravindra. Soon after, Axar Patel grabbed his second wicket by bowling Glenn Phillips, leaving the Kiwis under heavy pressure.
India did not have to pay much for an earlier dropped catch of Allen, with Axar dismissing the destructive opener in his first over. Shivam Dube had put down Allen earlier, but captain Suryakumar Yadav quickly reassured him to stay confident.
Earlier, India piled up a massive 255/5, the third-highest total in T20 World Cup history. After a relatively quiet phase where India went 16 balls without a boundary, Tilak Varma broke the drought with a four and Hardik Pandya followed with a six. However, New Zealand hit back as Pandya departed and then James Neesham produced a dramatic over, dismissing Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav — the latter for a golden duck.
Before that collapse, India’s top order had dismantled the New Zealand attack. Kishan smashed a 23-ball fifty and shared a century stand with Samson as India crossed the 200-run mark with five overs still remaining.
The fireworks began earlier with Abhishek Sharma blazing to an 18-ball half-century before falling for 52. Samson continued the assault with yet another fifty — his third in a row — as the pair powered India past 150 inside the 12th over.
The opening duo had earlier given India a flying start, racing to 92/0 in the powerplay and bringing up the team’s 100 within eight overs. Samson kick-started the innings with a six off Matt Henry, while Abhishek followed with a string of boundaries and a towering six.
