US Iran tensions live: Oman’s foreign minister likely to meet J.D. Vance in Washington as tensions simmer

Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi is expected to meet the US vice president in Washington on Friday, as Muscat continues to mediate indirect talks between Tehran and Washington. The meeting comes a day after the third round of negotiations between Iran and the United States concluded in Geneva, amid lingering concerns over a potential US military strike on Iran — despite reports of incremental progress.

With no immediate breakthrough in sight, Albusaidi earlier said discussions would resume following consultations and technical-level meetings scheduled for next week in Vienna.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told state television that the latest round “made very good progress and entered into the elements of an agreement very seriously,” covering both nuclear issues and sanctions relief. He indicated that the next phase of negotiations could take place in less than a week, with technical talks set to begin Monday in Vienna under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Although the immediate threat of US military action appears to have eased following the talks, President Donald Trump last week imposed a 15-day deadline for Iran to reach an agreement.

Tehran has maintained that negotiations must remain limited to its nuclear programme, while Washington is pressing for broader concessions, including curbs on Iran’s missile programme and its support for militant groups across the region.
