Galgotias University Faces Row Over ‘Robodog’ at AI Impact Summit Expo
Authorities on Wednesday reportedly asked Galgotias University in Greater Noida to vacate its space at the AI Impact Summit Expo, citing a “national embarrassment” after a robotic dog showcased at the event was alleged to be a product of China-based Unitree Robotics, according to people familiar with the matter.
Responding to the reports, Professor Neha Singh of Galgotias University denied receiving any such directive. “We have not received any such direction. Galgotias University is a very responsible institution,” she said.
In a statement issued late Tuesday, the university said its faculty and students were deeply distressed by what it described as a “propaganda campaign.” It emphasized that robotics programming forms part of its academic efforts to equip students with practical AI skills using globally available technologies.
“Our vision is focused on student learning and innovation. We provide students with access to modern technologies so they can gain practical experience and prepare for the future,” the statement read, warning that “spreading negativity” could harm student morale.
Galgotias Robodog Controversy
The controversy began after a video clip from the expo went viral online. In the footage, Professor Neha Singh introduced the robotic dog, saying:
“You need to meet Orion. This has been developed by the Centre of Excellence at Galgotias University.”
She also described the robot as capable of surveillance and monitoring tasks and said it could move freely across the campus.
Soon after the video gained traction, social media users claimed that the machine resembled a robodog manufactured by Unitree Robotics, a Chinese robotics company.
University Issues Clarification
Amid the backlash, Galgotias University released a clarification on social media, stating that it had never claimed to have built the robotic dog itself.
“Galgotias has not built this robodog, nor have we claimed to do so,” the university said. “What we are building are minds that will soon design, engineer, and manufacture such technologies here in Bharat.”
What Is a Unitree Robodog?
Robodogs developed by Unitree Robotics are advanced four-legged robots designed to mimic animal-like movement while performing various tasks, including inspection, research, and entertainment. The company has gained global attention for producing comparatively affordable robotic platforms, often seen as alternatives to higher-priced systems like Boston Dynamics’ Spot.
