Why Was YouTube Down? Google Issues First Statement Amid Global Outage
YouTube suffered a widespread global disruption on Tuesday, affecting users in several countries, including India and the United States, as large numbers of people reported difficulties accessing videos and related services.
Google acknowledged the problem early in the outage through a statement from TeamYouTube, saying: “We’re aware some of you are having issues accessing YouTube right now. Our teams are aware, and we’ll provide updates as soon as we have them.”
An update later posted on YouTube’s help page attributed the incident to a malfunction in the platform’s recommendations system. “An issue with our recommendations system prevented videos from appearing across surfaces on YouTube, including the homepage, the YouTube app, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids,” the company said, adding that while the homepage had been restored, work on a full fix was ongoing.
Outage monitoring site Downdetector recorded a sharp spike in user complaints worldwide. At the peak of the disruption, more than 320,000 reports were logged in the United States. In India, complaints also surged rapidly, with tens of thousands of users flagging issues within a short period, indicating that the outage was global rather than region-specific.
Users reported videos failing to load, errors on both the YouTube app and website, and repeated “something went wrong” messages. Elevated complaint levels were also observed for YouTube TV and some Google services, pointing to a broader platform-side issue.
Downdetector aggregates outage information from user-submitted reports and other signals, meaning the figures reflect disruption trends rather than the exact number of affected users. Meanwhile, social media platforms saw a flood of posts from users reporting simultaneous access problems.
YouTube, owned by Google, is the world’s largest video-sharing platform, with more than 2.5 billion monthly active users globally.
