AAP Leader Lucky Oberoi Shot Dead in Jalandhar; Probe Underway
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Lucky Oberoi was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Punjab’s Jalandhar on Friday morning, police said.
The incident occurred around 7:50 am near the Model Town gurdwara, where Oberoi had gone to offer prayers. He was attacked while coming out of the premises, according to sources.
Two bike-borne attackers reportedly arrived at the spot and fired 8 to 10 rounds using sophisticated weapons before fleeing. Visuals from the scene showed shattered glass inside Oberoi’s black Thar SUV, indicating the intensity of the attack.
The injured leader was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds, Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa confirmed.
Political Reactions
Following reports of Oberoi’s death, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the AAP-led Punjab government over the law-and-order situation in the state.
“Once again, law and order has completely collapsed in Punjab. AAP is Paap for Punjab,” BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said in a post on X.
AAP leaders have yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident.
Investigation Underway
Police have launched a detailed investigation and are analysing CCTV footage from the area to identify the attackers. Further details are awaited.
Recent Pattern of Violence
The killing comes weeks after another AAP leader, Jarmal Singh, was shot dead in Amritsar on January 4. Singh was attacked at close range while attending a wedding.
He was a resident and sarpanch of Valthoa village. Following that incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had directed police to ensure swift identification and arrest of those responsible.
Authorities say efforts are being intensified to curb targeted attacks on political figures in the state.
