Trump Warns of Strong Response if Canada Pursues Trade Deal With China

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States would take significant action if Canada moves forward with a trade agreement negotiated with China.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump warned that such a deal could increase Beijing’s influence over Canada.

“If they do a deal with China, we’ll do something very substantial,” Trump said. “We don’t want China to take over Canada. And if they make the deal they’re looking to make, China will take over Canada.”

Last week, Trump said he would impose 100 percent tariffs on Canadian goods if Ottawa proceeds with the agreement, escalating trade tensions between the two countries.
