A Hindu man in Bangladesh died after jumping into a river to escape a mob accusing him of theft, police said on Wednesday. The incident reportedly took place in Naogaon.

The deceased has been identified as Mithun Sarkar, according to Naogaon Police Superintendent Mohammad Tariqul Islam, whose statement was shared by ANI.

“He was chased by a mob accusing him of theft. He jumped into the water, and after he jumped in, he died. The police were informed, and his body was recovered with the help of the fire service. A post-mortem is being conducted, and the matter is under investigation,” SP Islam said.

This incident comes amid a spate of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, which has seen growing unrest since the death of prominent student leader Sharif Osman Hadi in December 2025.

The first reported attack on a Hindu after Hadi’s death occurred on December 18, when Dipu Chandra Das was lynched by a mob in an unrelated incident that began with rumours of blasphemy. His body was tied to a tree and set on fire before authorities intervened.

The Naogaon tragedy highlights ongoing concerns over communal tensions and mob violence in Bangladesh.
